Popular Dives

There are many dives sites all around Malta, Gozo and Comino.  Here are just a few of the most popular ones.

Malta

Gozo
Comino

MALTA

CIRKEWWA

Sharon Metson

A very popular dive area with three easy entry points.  Ideal for first timers or qualified divers.

There are gullies between 2 and 11 metres.

The left archway is at 10m which you can swim in.

A Statue of the Madonna was placed in a small cave at 17m by a local dive club.

The “ROZI” tugboat, built in Bristol 1958  working mainly in Liverpool until 1972 when she was sold to Malta Ship Towage Ltd.  In 1992 she was sold to Captain Morgan Cruises and scuttled as an attraction for those on a submarine trip.  The submarine is no longer operating and this makes an ideal dive being upright, 30 metres in length and at a depth of 28 to 36m.

There is also an anchor in the sand at 32m between the reef and the Rozi.

The Right archway is at 18m which you can swim in and around, where occasionally shoals of barracuda are seen.  There are various swim throughs and tunnels on the way.

P-29 PATROL BOAT

On the 14th August 2007 the P-29 Patrol Boat was scuttled at Cirkewwa.  The wreck is 62 metres long, and at a depth of 30 to 37 metres on the sand.  The deck is at 28 metres, and the top of the mast is at 21.  The wreck is located near the shore and has lots of new things to explore.  The P29 is the sister ship of the P31 which was sunk in 2009.

Both the P31 and P29 were used in East Germany in the cold war era to patrol the river banks between the east and west.  They were also used as mine sweeping operations between Germany and Denmark.  Malta used them to patrol the continental shelf and against smuggling operations.

HMS MAORI

This ship is a Tribal Class Destroyer, and in 1941 was one of the ships used in the search for the Bismark.  She helped by keeping the Bismark on radar, and picking up survivors from the German Battle Ship.  Later in the war she was hit by a bomb and unfortunately sunk.

She was re-floated, stripped of all armourments to re-enforce the walls of Valletta and towed out to her final resting place at 14m.

The stern was towed out to deeper water.

WIED IZ ZURRIEQ

Two Wall dives to 40m.  One has a cave at 26m which exits at 16m.

Just away from the reef is the wreck of the Um El-Faroud which is a 110m long oil tanker that was purposefully sunk in 1998.  Whilst in dry dock, there was an explosion in number 3 center tank and 9 workmen tragically lost their lives.

She was sunk as an artificial reef in respect and as a memorial to those who perished.

After two bad winters, this vessel is now completely split in two, but still upright at between 16 and 32m.

A local dive club have sunk a large divers helmet between the reef and the wreck at 30m.

GHAR LAPSI

A very picturesque area which is ideal for snorkeling, swimming and enjoying the view.

You can exit the bay through a shallow swim through cave with three outlets between 2 and 7 metres.

Finger reef goes out from the shore, with a bottle cave at the end of the reef.

This dive is ideal for all levels as the reef slopes gently to 22 metres.

ANCHOR BAY

An easy shallow dive suitable for all levels, with a maximum of around 12 metres.

This dive site is at the same location as the film set of the musical Popeye which stared Robin Williams.  The film was made in 1980 and the set is still a tourist attraction.

After a short swim you can enter a cave at 10m in which you can surface.  There is also an Anchor in the sand at 7m.

X127 - LIGHTER

Formerly known as the Carolita, after extensive research, this wreck has now been re-identified.

This ship dates from about 1915 and was used for ferrying troops and horses in the Dardanelles.  In 1921 she was converted to a water carrier in Malta and was bombed during the second world war in the Grand Harbour and scuttled in her present position.

She lays between 6 and 22 metres with bow up.

TWO TUG BOATS

St Michael and 10 are two small tugboats.  They were purposefully sunk in 1998.  The Tugs were used in the Grand Harbour for many years.

The tugs are 20 and 16 metres in length.

Both Tugs are upright in the sand between 17 and 22 metres.

A beautiful area with many different stunning dives to explore.

Step into this 15 metre deep hole and enter the open sea through a large arch at 7 metres before swimming under and around the Azure Window.

Or go around the point and through the chimney, and explore coral gardens.

On the way back you can enter a cave at the bottom of the blue hole before surfacing.

INLAND SEA

Sharon Metson

Swim through an 80 metre long tunnel towards the open sea.

Large groupers and barracuda can sometimes be seen as you exit the tunnel.

This is an exciting and unique dive with steep walls that drop to over 50 metres.

Close to the Blue Hole is a large cave which is full of life and the possibility of a sea horse.

The bottom of the cave is 35 metres.

You can then swim around the point and exit through the stunning blue hole.

A lovely pretty dive, great for photographers.

KARWELA & COMINOLAND WRECKS

The Karwela and Cominoland wrecks were scuttled in August 2006.

They both sit upright in the sand.  The maximum depth of the two dives is around 40 metres.

A VW Beetle has been put on the main deck of the Karwela.

The Karwella has been stripped of all paint and the Cominoland has been left with the paint on to see which attracts more life.

P31 WRECK

Both the P31 and P29 were used in East Germany in the cold war era to patrol the river banks between the east and west.  They were also used for mine sweeping operations between Germany and Denmark.  Malta used them to patrol the continental shelf and against smuggling operations.
